More Tips to Avoid Mishaps on Moving Day

in Moving & Storage

We are continuing our series of articles providing you with tips to help you avoid mishaps on moving day. Our previous article discussed the importance of making sure the boxes you pack are not too heavy to safely handle and determining where you would like for your full service movers and packers to set your furniture and belongings when they bring them into your new home. Today, we will look at more helpful tips to consider.

IF YOU HAVE TO LIFT, USE YOUR LEGS

If you hire full service movers and packers, they will do all the heavy lifting for you. However, if you find that you need to lift and move items at any point during the process, then be sure to lift with your legs and not your back. Lifting heavy items using your back muscles increases the chances of back and neck injuries. When lifting, try to maintain a wide base of support with your feet flat on the ground. Then squat to pick up the box/item and then use your legs to move upward.

KEEP FOOT TRAFFIC AREAS CLEAR

It’s extremely easy for small items, toys, and other obstacles to find their way into high traffic areas during a move. Strive to keep all paths free of people, pets, and clutter so your full service movers and packers can have a clear pathway to work within while moving your belongings.

Our next article will cover more tips to help you prevent moving day mishaps.

Tips to Avoid Moving Day Mishaps

in Moving & Storage

Our full service movers and packers have seen it all, and when it comes to moving day mishaps, many can be avoided. Our next series of articles will cover some tips to help you avoid common mishaps. Let’s get started:

AVOID HEAVY BOXES

If you choose to pack boxes yourself, be careful to not overpack them. If they are too heavy, they will be extremely difficult to handle and move. Professional movers and packers know how to pack boxes in a way that avoids items getting damaged, lessens the chance of them getting dropped, and does not result in them being challenging to handle.

ORGANIZE YOUR FURNITURE AND BELONGINGS

Try to have an idea of where you want your furniture and belongings before your movers and packers arrive at your new home. Having a set plan on where everything needs to go can help ensure your movers and packers understand your needs so they can place your furniture, boxes, etc. in the right areas of your home, avoiding the need for you to have to move it later.

Our next article will discuss more tips to help you avoid moving day mishaps.

Moving Preparation Tips

Moving Preparation Tips

in Moving & Storage

Our long distance and local movers recommend preparing for your move long before the big day. We have been discussing some moving preparation tips to keep in mind if you are planning an upcoming move.

Our previous articles covered how you should hire and schedule your full service movers and packers sooner than later, the importance of making an inventory of your belongings and getting rid of items you no longer need, making task checklist to ensure nothing is overlooked, packing enough clothes and essential supplies for each person and pet for three days, and making sure your new home is ready to move into. Here are more tips as recommended by our full service movers and packers.

AVOID INJURIES DURING YOUR MOVE

It is important to take care of yourself, your family, and anyone helping you with your move. Even if you hire full service movers and packers, you should still use caution when preparing for them to arrive and before and after your move.  This includes being careful when lifting heavy furniture or boxes, using your legs when lifting instead of your back, keeping hallways and pathways clear of toys, boxes, and clutter, etc. You don’t want either you or someone else to end up at urgent care or the hospital.

LEAVE THE HEAVY STUFF TO THE PROFESSIONALS

It is important to have a plan of where everything is going to go in your new home so that your full service movers and packers can place heavy furniture and boxes in their designated areas. Let them do all the heavy lifting for you! This is especially important in the case of piano moving. Your piano movers will need to know where you want your piano so they can take care of setting it up for you.

Tips to Help You Prepare for Your Upcoming Move

in Moving & Storage

We are continuing our series of articles on tips to help you prepare for your next move. Our previous articles covered the importance of hiring and scheduling your full service movers and packers once you have settled on a firm date for your move. We also discussed making an inventory of your belongings, donating, selling, or throwing away items you no longer need, and making various checklists to ensure you do not forget anything important. Today, we will look at more preparation tips to consider.

Pack Enough for at Least Three Days

It is important to pack enough for each family member and pet for three days. This includes clothing, medication, toiletries, pillows, sleeping bags, pet beds, pet food and bowls, laptop computers, phone chargers, and other essentials you may need until you get fully moved and somewhat settled.

Make Sure Your New Home is Ready to Move Into

Once you have your move-in date and have scheduled your full service movers and packers to transport your belongings, you will need to take steps to make sure your new home is ready to move into on that designated day. This may include turning on the utilities, cleaning the home, prepping the rooms for boxes, and anything else that may need to be completed for your first few nights to be safe and comfortable.

Our next article will cover more tips as recommended by our long distance and local movers.

Preparing for Your Upcoming Move

Preparing for Your Upcoming Move

in Moving & Storage

Our previous article covered the importance of hiring and scheduling your full service movers and packers as soon as you know what day you want to move. We also discussed why you should inventory your belongings. Today, we will look at more tips to help you prepare for your upcoming move.

DONATE, SELL, OR THROW AWAY ITEMS

Now is the time to get rid of items you no longer want, need, or plan to use. There is no reason to pay your full service movers and packers to handle items you don’t need. Once you decide what you want to get rid of, offer any items you wish to family and/or friends, then plan a garage sale or donate them to a local non-profit, and take items that are no longer usable to the dump.

MAKE CHECKLISTS

Don’t underestimate the power of a good checklist! Making a checklist of what you need to do before, during, and after your move can help you stay organized. You may decide to have separate checklists for each family member and also for each different activity. For instance, you may have a checklist to follow once your movers and packers arrive. You may have another checklist for your first night in your new home. And, you could have yet another checklist for unpacking your belongings.

Our next article will cover more tips from our full service movers and packers.

Are You Ready for Your Move?

Are You Ready for Your Move?

in Moving & Storage

The moving day is often considered the “big” day in most moves. However, the weeks and months prior play an important role in making sure you are properly prepared for your move. Our long distance and local movers have seen it all, and probably the biggest challenge they see is when people do not take certain steps prior to their move. Our next series of articles will cover some tips to help you prepare for your next move.

HIRE AND SCHEDULE MOVERS AND PACKERS

The first step in the moving process is to hire and schedule movers and packers for the date you wish to move. Since moving companies are busy and run a tight ship, it is a good idea to get on their calendar as soon as you know your moving date. If you plan to hire a moving and storage company to store some of your belongings, try to consult with them sooner than later on how much you may need to store with them.

INVENTORY YOUR BELONGINGS

The next step is to inventory your belongings. This may sound basic, but most people are very surprised at just how much they have accumulated over the years. An inventory list not only helps you have a better picture to plan where you are going to place everything in your new home, but it is also helpful when you are unpacking after your move.

Our next article will cover more tips to consider as you prepare for your move.

Defining Moving Terms

What Does This Mean? Defining Moving Terms

in Local Moves, Long Distance Moves, Military Moves, Moving & Storage

We are continuing our series of articles defining some of the most common moving terms used by movers and packers. Our previous article covered the bill of lading, which is another name for your receipt. We also defined inventory as a descriptive, itemized list of the household goods your long distance or local movers will be handling. And we discussed that a high value article was any item valued at more than $100 per pound. Let’s define a few more moving terms:

Order for Service

The order for service is the final document that authorizes your full service moving company to transport your household goods to a designated location, which could be your new home, a storage facility, or somewhere else as authorized by you.

Storage-in-Transit (SIT)

Storage-in-transit is a term your moving and storage company uses to refer to the temporary storage facility where your household goods are being transported for an interim move. SIT is used quite often in military moves, and also in moves where someone is moving to a temporary location while they wait to close on another home.

Valuation

This is essentially the value of your entire shipment of household goods. Your moving and storage company will assign a monetary value to the household goods they are transporting.

What Are All These Moving Terms?

in Moving & Storage

Whether you are a seasoned mover, or this is a first time move, you may notice your movers and packers using some industry terminology that is unfamiliar to you.  The full service movers at 3 Guys Moving are trained to explain the process to our customers in detail. However, in the midst of everything, it may be difficult to remember all of the terminology. Our next series of articles will cover common terms used by movers and packers.

BILL OF LADING

The bill of lading is another name for your receipt. You will be asked to sign your bill of lading before your movers and packers begin to transport your household goods. This document is extremely important and should be kept with you throughout your move.

INVENTORY

The inventory is a descriptive, itemized list of the household goods that your full service moving company will be handling and transporting for your move.

HIGH VALUE ARTICLE

If you are moving an item valued at >$100 per pound, it will be classified as a high value article. It is advisable to disclose any high value articles to your movers and packers when they arrive. Piano movers will automatically list pianos, organs, etc. as high value articles.

Military Moves

Military Moves

in Military Moves, Moving & Storage

Our movers and packers handle quite a few military moves. We are continuing our series of articles discussing some ways to help your family prepare for an upcoming military move. Our previous articles covered the importance of communicating the plan to move with all family members as soon as possible so everyone has time to prepare. We also talked about researching the new area you will be moving to, finding some exciting activities and interests to explore, and closing out any existing commitments in your current area. We also discussed the importance of thoroughly outlining a moving plan, including engaging a moving and storage company to handle your household goods. Today, we will discuss some additional ideas to help your family prepare.

MAKE “TIME” TO SAY GOODBYE

One of the toughest aspects of a military move is the goodbye. Make sure you and your children allow ample time to say goodbye to friends, family, and even fun things you did in the area. Enjoy a meal at your favorite restaurant. Visit your favorite store. Give everyone ample time for closure.

A NEW CHAPTER BEGINS!

Your new adventure begins on the day your movers and packers arrive!  Keep moving forward and help everyone get excited about the new adventure. Take time when you arrive to your new destination to do some “fun” things in between unpacking. Most importantly, be supportive of one another and understand that everyone handles closure and new beginnings differently. Some family members may need more time to adjust, and that is perfectly OK. Let them know you are there for them.

3 Guys Moving is a trusted moving and storage company with both long distance and local movers to help ensure your move is stress-free and efficient.  Our movers and packers are experienced, knowledgeable, and treat your belongings like they would their own. We are an approved storage facility for the U.S. military, so our moving and storage company knows what it takes to get the job done right. We even handle piano moving. In fact, our piano movers are among some of the best in the business. If you have an upcoming move, we would be honored to serve you. Give us a call to connect with our movers and packers today!

Prepping Your Military Move

The movers and packers at 3 Guys Moving consider it an honor when we have an opportunity to provide quality moving services to members of the United States military. We are continuing our series of articles aimed at helping you and your family prepare for a military move.  Our previous article covered the importance of being open and honest with everyone in the family so they can emotionally prepare for the move. We also discussed researching the new area to discover some highlights and features that may generate excitement about your upcoming move. Today, we will explore more ways you can help prepare your family for a military move.

CLOSE OUT CURRENT COMMITMENTS

All family members with jobs, school, and other commitments should give plenty of notice. Employers will need time to re-hire and train a replacement. You will need to get transcripts from any schools / colleges you or your children are attending to help with the transfer to your new school.

OUTLINE YOUR PLAN

It is important to outline a comprehensive plan for your move. Where will you live?  Will you purchase a home? Reside in military housing? When will you move?  This all needs to be thought out and put on paper. You will also need to engage a trusted and approved moving and storage company for the U.S. military

Our next article will cover more tips to help you prepare for a military move.
